Dr.
James A. Harvey, consulting materials engineer to PlastiComp™,
Inc., has been named a Fellow of the Society for the Advancement
of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE). Harvey will be
inducted at the International SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition
in Long Beach, California on May 17, 2004.
SAMPE Fellows are selected based on their contributions to
materials and process engineering, innovation, professional
growth and development of other people in the field. It is
the highest honor that SAMPE bestows on its members, and only
88 scientists and engineers have been previously inducted
as Fellows.
Harvey has enjoyed a long and productive career in the areas
of polymers and plastics, composite materials, adhesives,
electronic materials and smart materials and structures. As
a professor at Winona State University, he helped establish
the first undergraduate composite materials engineering program
in the United States. Harvey went on to lead materials applications
research at the University of Dayton Research Institute and
Hughes STX Corporation, and to consult on materials applications,
analysis and testing at Hewlett Packard Company. Harvey now
owns a consulting company, Under the Bridge Consulting, and
works with PlastiComp™, Inc. on materials development
and applications.
With over 50 articles and book chapters and 23 patents, Harvey
has been a prolific contributor to materials applications
and process engineering. In addition to his consulting work,
he continues to teach numerous classes, short courses and
technical seminars.
For PlastiComp™, Inc., Harvey is working to further develop
materials and applications for the company’s Pushtrusion®
technology. In the Pushtrusion® composites molding process,
fiber and molten polymers are fed directly into the injection
molding barrel while still hot, eliminating the need for pre-compounded
resin pellets and giving molders the ability to maintain longer
fiber lengths. Composite product performance is greatly increased,
while costs are lowered dramatically. Pushtrusion® technology
is compact and can be retrofit to existing conventional injection
molding machines.
About PlastiComp
PlastiComp, Inc. is unique in providing both long fiber reinforced
thermoplastic (LFT) technology and direct long fiber reinforced
thermoplastic (D-LFT) technology to global customers. Complet®
composite pellets provide a single pellet solution for customers
with stringent requirements and rapid speed to market demands.
In contrast, Pushtrusion® direct in-line compounding offers
a complementary approach by providing substantial savings
compared to precompounded thermoplastic composite pellets.
PlastiComp also offers advanced contract molding along with
research and development including formula development, material
and part testing, and evaluation.
Complet® and Pushtrusion are registered trademarks
of PlastiComp, Inc.
